Welcome to Camp 2008. Below you will find descriptions for all of the wonderful camps that will be offered here at Greenwich Academy this summer. You also will find an application form to be filled out and mailed to the Business Office along with payment. Keep in mind that if you are signing up for any sport camps, you will be working directly with the person running that camp.

ART CHAIRS! with Erin Riley
Create a piece of art you can use! Design your own art chair using paint, collage or found objects. Take your ideas and an unfinished wood chair and create something unique and functional.

BEGINNING SEWING with Erin Riley
Learn the basics of machine sewing in this introductory class. You will learn the parts of the sewing machine, how to pin and cut as well as basic stitching. You will make tote bags, throw pillows and simple clothing.

Serial Art! Portfolio Development with Deborah Mason
Create a series of artworks using drawing, painting, collage, printing or sculpture. Take your ideas and transform them, follow a line of thought or follow a whim. Discover your artistic personality.

Extreme Drawing with Deborah Mason
Experiment with the extremes of styles and effects that you can conjure up in your drawings. Go for the unusual approach in this "anything goes" drawing workshop. Find your personal style.

Drawing Workshop
For children who would draw all day if you let them! This class covers several types of drawing and drawing concepts. The students will learn new techniques and vocabulary as they draw from life, imagination and memories with pencil, India ink, charcoal and pastel. Smock required.
Lower School students who register for the late morning and afternoon classes together or all three classes in one session will be supervised at lunch (BYO bag lunch) and during a brief recess at no additional charge.

Sculpey Sitting Sculptures (and More)
In this workshop, students will use neutral colored polymer clay (Sculpey) to fashion a small sitting or reclining self-portrait. They then will paint the figure with acrylics. Colorful polymer clay also will be used to create unique custom jewelry and small figures. Smock required.

Printmaking Printmaking Printmaking
The students will try a variety of printmaking techniques: from Styrofoam scratchboard to plexiglass monoprints to homemade stamps. Printmaking vocabulary will accompany each lesson. For the grand finale, they will use carving tools on a soft, safe material called “Soft-Kut” to make block prints. Smock required.

SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE with Adele Myers and Dancers
Classes include modern, ballet, hip-hop, Pilates, repertory, composition and partnering. All levels welcome. The week concludes with an informal performance by participants for family and friends.

RED CHAIR PLAYERS
The Greenwich Academy Drama Department is excited to announce the return of The Red Chair Performing Arts Camp! Students from Groups V through IX will dive into stage combat, scene study, improvisation, dance, theatrical movement, make-up, costume and set design workshops, which will culminate in a thrilling performance at the end of the camp. Teachers will be Ms. Fuller, Ms. Mangone and visiting guest artists from New York.

FILM-MAKING for Middle School Students
In this two-week workshop, students will make several short films. For each project, students will work in small production teams to brainstorm a storyline and perform it for the camera. They then will edit their footage adding effects, graphics and music using iMovie HD. Students will have access to GA’s costume room, and various locations on campus to make their stories come to life. This is a great opportunity for students to experiment with film technology while exploring their creativity. On the last day, there will be a screening for friends and family. Students can expect to take home a DVD of their films. All camera equipment and tape stock will be provided.

MUSIC VIDEO for Middle School Students
Have you ever wanted to make a music video? Well, this is your big chance! In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to create a music video starting from scratch. Working in small groups, students will select a song, choreograph and film an original dance to it and then edit their footage and song together using iMovie HD. Students will have access to GA’s prop and costume rooms, as well as multiple locations on campus to make their songs come to life. At the end of the course, students will screen their work for friends and family and take home a DVD copy of their final movie. All camera equipment and tape stock will be provided.

MULTIMEDIA for Parents Who Use Macs
Do you have video footage, still pictures and great songs that you would love to put together into one moving image album? In this workshop, students will learn how to integrate their favorite material in order to make a multimedia masterpiece. Students will work with a combination of iMovie, iPhoto and iTunes and will learn the basics of editing video together with photographs and music. Students will create a DVD of their final film using iDVD.

FUN WITH SPORTS
Now the youngest of athletes have their own sports camp! This camp will introduce age-appropriate drills, skills and lead-up games in all of our favorite sports. The girls will enjoy soccer, basketball, softball, lacrosse, floor hockey and more! The highlights of the camp will include special “theme” warm-ups and Field Day competitions.

SQUASH
Take advantage of the Greenwich Academy Squash Complex. This state-of-the-art facility includes five international squash courts and a fully-equipped fitness center for the exclusive use of the GA summer training camp. Sessions include individual instruction, group instruction, video analysis, lectures on strategy, technique and sports psychology, supervised drills, match play and fitness training. All levels of play are welcome.

FIELD HOCKEY
Come and shoot around with players from other local schools, learn new skills, brush up on old skills and have fun in an intense learning environment. All sessions will be led by Jamie Brower, who has over 16 years of playing and coaching experience. Currently the JV coach at Greenwich Academy, Jamie's previous playing experience includes being captain of the Division I Penn State Field Hockey team, two-time division I All-American, a member of the Under 21 Women’s National Team that played in international tournaments, as well as a 2002 alternate for the U.S. National Team. Jamie loves the sport of field hockey and looks forward to sharing it with all she has the opportunity to coach.

BEATING THE SUGAR BLUES: Strategies for Healthy Eating and Healthy Living for GA Parents
Are you concerned with the amount of sugar you and your family consume? Are you interested in the connection between sugar intake and your weight, mood and overall health? This course for parents will cover basic principles of nutrition and weight management, strategies for beating sugar cravings and recipes for quick and easy meals and healthy snacks. Yoga classes also will be included in the course curriculum as a practice that promotes weight management and well-being. In addition, we will take a field trip to the local Whole Foods Market, where we will learn how to negotiate the aisles as savvy and health-conscious consumers.
