PROGRAMS FOR PARENTS

Below are brief descriptions of the different types of programs offered to Greenwich Academy parents.

Parents of Color Affinity Group
Founded in 2000 supports parent body and meets four times per year. The last meeting is a cook-out held with newly accepted parents of color. For more information, email Gloria Tearte at gtearte@greenwichacademy.org.

Parents Together
A long established town-wide program, Parents Together exists to provide opportunities for parents to come together to communicate, share, support and learn – all for the purpose of strengthening and enriching family life. This is accomplished through meetings at which parents hear noted speakers on a variety of topics pertinent to the challenges of parenting in today’s world, and through the publication of two newsletters, which address interests and concerns of parents in the community. Greenwich Academy and Brunswick jointly sponsor meetings each year. Meetings last about an hour and half, and include a presentation by the speaker followed by a question and answer period. MORE

Brown Bag Program
Each year, GA and GAPA jointly sponsor a series of meetings facilitated by an outside professional and targeted at age-specific issues or concerns for parents of students in the same or similar grade levels. Depending on the students’ developmental stage and the needs of parents, discussion topics may come from the parents, the speaker, the school or all of the above. Working closely with the GAPA division reps, the facilitator is asked to maintain an appropriate balance of interactive parent discussion and his or her own professional insights. The name “Brown Bag” connotes that refreshments are not provided and the atmosphere is informal, so parents are welcome, if they like, to bring their own drink or snack.

In addition to the Brown Bag series described above, certain division heads also hold Brown Bag meetings with parents to discuss issues and concerns that are relevant to the grade addressed. Working through the GAPA division reps and class reps, these are held on campus at the school’s discretion and may be called at various times throughout the year depending on the needs of the students and families of the grades involved.

Lower School Coffees
In addition to the September coffees that take place in all grades, the Lower School offers two additional rounds of grade-level coffees, one in October and another in April. These meetings are led by the Head of Lower School Jeanette Tyndall, and may include other faculty members as well. They have as their purpose to keep ongoing communication open between parents and school, and as an opportunity for parents to discuss and learn more about current educational, behavioral, and parenting issues affecting their children.

GAPA Board and Board Meetings
All parents and guardians of GA students are considered members of the Greenwich Academy Parents Association (GAPA). The GAPA board comprises 37 members appointed by the nominating committee, and each year, all parents are encouraged to nominate their peers or to self-nominate for the various board positions. The monthly full-board meetings are open to all parents, and minutes are posted on this web site. Each meeting starts with remarks by the Head of School followed by a short program on a topic of interest to the membership. GAPA officers and committee chairs report on current activities that require board discussion or a board vote, and all board members are invited to make timely announcements. Please visit GAPA Board and Meetings for the listing of board members, meeting dates and minutes.
