Greenwich Academy and Brunswick School present The Sound of Music

In their most ambitious production ever, Upper School students from Greenwich Academy and Brunswick School will present The Sound of Music at 7 PM on Friday, March 2, and at 7 PM and at 2 PM and 7 PM on Saturday, March 3, 2007.

“With a cast of 101, including one Lower School girl and one Middle School boy, the logistics are challenging,” says director Linda Ames Key, “and one of our major challenges was costuming. With many of the parts calling for multiple changes, we needed 1001 costume pieces. Greenwich Academy is fortunate to have a talented, full-time costume designer, who, with her cadre of volunteers, created many new costumes for this production and altered countless pieces from our exceptional costume collection.”

The popular musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein tells the story of a spirited young nun, Maria, who is sent by her Mother Superior to take care of the children of the recently widowed Captain Georg von Trapp. Since the death of his beloved wife, Captain von Trapp has run the household like a military battleship; no governess has survived longer than a few weeks, and then Maria arrives.  She changes their lives, filling the house with music and bringing a sense of joy and play.

When Maria finds herself falling in love with the captain, she flees to the convent, only to be ordered back to face her feelings by the Mother Abbess. After their marriage, Maria, Captain von Trapp and the children are forced to leave Austria. Captain von Trapp is Austrian to the core and vehemently is opposed to the Anschluss. The von Trapps use the cover of a performance at the Kaltzberg Festival to escape the Nazis, and, as the show ends, they disappear into the mountains headed toward Italy and freedom.

The Sound of Music features the well-loved songs “Do Re Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “My Favorite Things” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”;with special performances by Greenwich Academy’s Madrigals and Bel Canto singers, joined by the Brunswick School’s a capella group, "M.O.B" - Men of Brunswick.
The show is directed by Linda Ames Key, with musical direction by Alexander Constantine. Assistant directors are Lacey Friedman and Amanda Ball. The set design was created by Eric Everett; lighting design by Mark Murray; and costume design by Dawn Korinek.
