The Greenwich Academy Athletic department has always been quite busy but nothing matches the atmosphere this particular spring session. GA have seven sports going on simultaneously and out of those seven there is a new sport, track, which was started by Devan FitzPatrick this year. Here is a sports update for the spring season at GA:
Crew:
The crew team has gotten off to a great start. The GA team has won all of their regattas so far. In the Greenwich Invitational, the first regatta of the season, the JV eight and Varsity four got first, starting off the season on a great note. The next regatta the crew team has is Saturday, April 29, where they are competing against NJ Champs in Copper River. As for the future of the team, Lindsey Harriss, co-captain, says, “The novice team is coming along well. We have some new girls who have already shown immense improvement.” According to Lindsey, the season should be amazing especially since the crew team has “become more of a family.” |
Sailing:
The Sailing team has won all of their regattas so far. Although they haven’t had any major regattas yet, their first big one was the 23rd of April. This particular regatta is an O-Day qualifier, which is a much honored sailing event where GA, if qualified, will be up against the best. One captain, Emma Corbishly, is not only excited for the many regattas this season but also for the time she gets to spend with her team, “It is really fun being on the team because there are only nine of us so we’re really tight.”

Golf:
The golf team has been amazing this season. They have won all five of their games so far, winning against KLHT, Hackley School, and School of the Holy Child with a 5-0 victory each time. If you would like to go and support them you can see them at Roundhill CC on April 27 competing against Hill, Hotchkiss and Taft. |
Softball:
The softball team has had a pretty good season winning four out of seven games. Their hardest game was the one against Green Farms Academy, “We had a great win yesterday against GFA over a very good pitcher. If we continue to play at this level then we will have an outstanding season,” said Coach Derosa. After GFA, the team went on to beat Canterbury School with a score of 17-2 and it seems they can only go up from here. You can catch them at their next home game at Tuefel Field on May 4 against KLHT. |
Lacrosse:
The Lacrosse team got off to a challenging start this season with their double loss against Westminster School, 9-10, and Wilton High School where they scored 7-9. However, according to the coach Ms. Angela Tammaro, better known as Ms. T, “The team has begun to figure things out.” This showed when the team won their games against Darien High School, Millbrook School, and Berkshire School; the latter two were victories where the GA score, was more than four times the opponents’ score. Ms. T. has great hopes for this season and praises the two captains, Annie Ferrer and Taryn Petrelli, saying they set a good example for the team and encourage everyone to do their best. You can see them at their next home game on May 21 where they will be competing against Holy Child. |
Tennis:
The tennis team seems to be undefeatable this season with their five major victories. You can catch them at their next home game on April 27 against Choate
Rosemary. It should be an intense match but with the tennis team’s perfect record you can probably guess who will win. |
Track:
The track team is a newly started sport at GA with enthusiastic runners ready to compete. The captains are Devan FitzPatrick, Lindsay Kieffaber, and Natacha Jamar and they are working the team hard with either a five-mile run or an abundance of sprints. But according to Chantel Johnson, an eager teammate, “The captains are amazing, and even though the workouts are pretty tough the races are always rewarding.” Two promising girls this season are Devan FitzPatrick and Cecilia Haig who have both placed and done an excellent job representing the GA track team. You can see their next race May 3 at GHS.
