Upper
School Plays
Each fall and spring, a large cast play is produced with many students
from Greenwich Academy and Brunswick School. Students must participate
in set or costume construction as well.
Drama Club
The Drama Club at Greenwich Academy allows students who are interested
in theater to explore performing by acting in scenes in the
fall cabaret. In Drama Club, students are exposed to
improvisational exercises, scene study, Shakespearean style and
dramatic writing. The cabarets are student produced as well, so
that students who are interested in the backstage element of theater
can learn directing, stage management, lighting and set design.
Winterfest
Winterfest is the annual Upper School holiday program of
drama and dance.
Group IX Shakespeare
Each winter Group IX students from Brunswick and GA rehearse and
perform a different Shakespearen play. The drama and English departments
work together, so that the performances occur as the play is being
read and discussed in English class. Performing Shakespeare enables
students to live the poetry, wisdom, humor and mores of Renaissance
England and to understand Shakespeare's work on a far deeper level
than they could experience from a reading. Past productions have
included Othello, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream,
Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It and The Tempest.
Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Every two years, a carefully selected group of Upper School students
travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, for two weeks where they experience
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival--one of the largest performing arts
festivals of its kind. The students perform in their own production,
hawk their flyers on High Street, see numerous shows, serve as technicians
for other productions and explore the city. Their last two productions
have won Fringe First awards which single out productions of special
merit from among the 1600 shows performing. Click
here for information on past productions LARAMIE 2002 and BANG 2004.
Senior Project
Every two years, a special senior project is produced that is selected
based upon the special abilities of that particular year's seniors.
Rehearsals run two days a week five months--the extended rehearsal
time allows for intense exploration and in-depth understanding of
the play. Past productions have included Quilters, The
Laramie Project and A Chorus Line.
